    Final Postage Step

    Metering & Sealing

    Postage Applied. Ready to Mail.

High-speed postage metering and envelope sealing — the final step before your mail enters the USPS stream.

    What Is Metering & Sealing?

A postage meter is a USPS-approved machine that prints a postage indicia (the red digital mark showing postage paid, date, and ZIP code) directly onto envelopes or adhesive strips. Sealing wets and closes the envelope flap simultaneously. Metered mail is one of the most efficient ways to apply postage for large volume mailings and is accepted for all first-class and standard mail classes.

Metering is the application of digitally-printed postage to mail pieces using a USPS-approved postage meter. Sealing is the simultaneous moistening and closing of envelope flaps. Catdi Printing's high-speed mailing machines meter and seal thousands of pieces per hour — the last step before our postal runs. Metered mail shows a digital ink impression with the postage amount and mailing date.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A postage meter indicia is the printed mark applied to the upper right corner of an envelope showing that postage has been paid. It includes the postage amount, mailing date, originating ZIP code, and meter license number. It is the digital equivalent of a postage stamp for bulk mail operations.
Standard metered mail does not include piece-level tracking. However, when combined with our IMB (Intelligent Mail Barcode) addressing service, metered mail can be tracked through USPS scan events. We routinely apply IMB barcodes alongside metering for campaign tracking.
A permit imprint is a pre-printed indicia (often 'U.S. Postage PAID' with a permit number) used for very large mailings where a permit account is pre-funded. A meter imprint is applied per-piece and debits from the meter's postage credit. For most campaigns under 50,000 pieces, metering is more flexible. For very large or recurring campaigns, permit imprints may be more efficient.
Yes. After metering and sealing, we transport your mail to the appropriate USPS acceptance facility for entry. We handle Standard Mail drop shipment, First Class drop, and non-profit entry — all included in our full-service direct mail workflow.
Yes. Envelope sealing can be performed as a standalone service. If you're using USPS stamps (affixed separately) or a permit imprint, we can seal-only your envelopes before stamps are affixed or permit mail is submitted.
